On those bleariest of bleary-eyed mornings, we've been known to make our shampoo do double duty as soap. Turns out that that's okay, since skin and hair come from the same genetic material!

Though your skin and hair - and for that matter, your eyes and teeth - cannot be differentiated genetically, don't go substituting your toothpaste for hair gel anytime soon. But beyond the genetic level, what accounts for the differences in these bodily features? The answer lies in epigenetics.

In this NOVA Science Now segment, renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson turns his attention towards more earthly bodies and distills the nuances of epigenetics via identical twins, mice and other things that scientists spend a lot of time studying in order to better understand life-threatening diseases like cancer.

The Ghost in Your Genes originally aired on WORLD on July 24th and 31st.
